Waste Sorter Benjamin

drei Gehäkelte Mülltonnen in blau, grün und orange sind um einen Teller mit Müllteilchen arrangiert.

Waste Sorter Benjamin is a simple, yet versatile Montessori style toy. Many kids enjoy sorting small things by color or form. On a hot day, they turn into refreshing no-waste water bombs.

Recycling is a big topic in Germany. Did you know that every city has its own recycling system? Packaging might be collected in either bins or plastic bags. Glass might be collected in big containers in your neighborhood, but in some cities it will be conveniently picked up right in front of your home. Garbage bins for different purposes have different colors. But the color system differs from town to town and can even be contradictory. For my waste sorter, I chose colors that I associate with recycling. Blue for paper and green for organic waste. The orange color is an homage to my childhood, when garbage trucks in Germany came in a vibrant orange. Combine your personal recycling colors with the six embroidered recycling symbols.

Skills you need: Chain stitch, Tunisian simple stitch in rows and in the round, single crochet stitch, Tunisian bind-off. For the embroidery back stitch and French knot stitch.

The bins consist of a square bottom worked in rows. The side walls are worked in rounds.
