Shuttle tatting is my favorite craft, partly because you can take it anywhere. Not only are the materials (the input) tiny, but the finished lace (the output) is too. A project in progress, along with all the necessary tools, can fit inside a phone case. Tatting is quite simply the perfect travel craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Places for Tatting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since tatting doesn\u2019t require sharp needles, it\u2019s safe to use on all kinds of transportation. It helps pass the time on buses or trains, on the commute to work, in the car (as a passenger, of course), or even on a ferry. I haven\u2019t tried it on a plane yet, but I don\u2019t see why it wouldn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My dream is tatting on vacation\u2014at the beach, by the pool, or in the evening on a hotel balcony. You can take it to a caf\u00e9 or a picnic. I\u2019ve even tatted at the playground while the kids were playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short: we can tat anywhere we would usually pull out our phones to kill time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 Tips for a Compact Tatting Kit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In theory, you need the same tools for \"tatting-to-go\" as you do at home.
In practice, these five tips will help you save space and weight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planning is everything<\/strong>
This might seem obvious, but I\u2019m including it for the sake of completeness. If you want to minimize bulk, choose one specific project and pack only what you need for it. Select your pattern, the right thread, your shuttle, and a crochet hook if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wind your shuttles<\/strong>
I like to wind mybobbins<\/a> at home. That way, I can start knotting immediately without carrying a whole ball of thread. If I\u2019m going to be away for a while but don\u2019t want a bulky ball of yarn, I prepare small \"mini-balls\" (about 5\u201310 meters). I can use these to refill my shuttles as needed. If you use shuttles with interchangeable bobbins, you can wind the yarn directly to the bobbins.
Personally, I don't work as fast while traveling as I do at home. On a train, I like to look out the window or chat with curious fellow passengers. For me, that\u2019s part of the charm of tatting-to-go\u2014so I don't need to bring massive amounts of thread.
Of course, if you\u2019re someone who hits your \"flow\" and becomes extra productive while traveling, you should pack more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wenn Du Schiffchen mit herausnehmbaren Spulen benutzt, kannst Du nat\u00fcrlich direkt die Wechselspulen bewickeln.Ich pers\u00f6nlich komme unterwegs meistens nicht so schnell voran, wie zu Hause. Im Zug schaue ich eben auch mal aus dem Fenster oder komme mit neugierigen Mitreisenden ins Gespr\u00e4ch. Das tr\u00e4gt f\u00fcr mich durchaus zum Reiz des Occhi-to-go bei und hei\u00dft f\u00fcr mich: Nimm nicht zu viel Garn mit.Vielleicht geh\u00f6rst Du zu den Menschen, die unterwegs erst so richtig in den Flow kommen und besonders produktiv sind.
